Introduction

The Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is an iconic trek that weaves together history, culture, and personal growth. This journey in September 2019 carried profound meaning, marking a pivotal point in my personal healing and exploration. After acclimatizing in the Sacred Valley (as detailed in my previous blog), I felt ready to embark on this next chapter. With my daughter, Anna, who shared both the adventure and our photography gear, Day 1 of the Classic Inca Trail offered breathtaking views and moments of self-discovery.

Day 1: The Classic Inca Trail Begins in the Sacred Valley

Morning Activities

The Classic Inca Trail trek began around 8 am, following a visit to the Historical Interpretation Center of Machupicchu. After a hearty breakfast and a final gear check, we set off from the trailhead in Piscacucho, located 82 kilometers along the railway from Cusco. This iconic starting point marked the beginning of an unforgettable journey.

Our private guide, Nick, and the porters ensured that this trek would be a uniquely personal experience. Crossing the Urubamba River at a quieter spot, we ventured deeper into the Sacred Valley along the ancient Inca paths.

The beginning of the Classic Inca Trail

“Setting Off with Excitement”

At the start of the Classic Inca Trail, we’re equipped with cameras and gear, ready to embark on this epic adventure through the Andes Mountains. With our guide leading the way, we’re eager to capture every moment and explore the breathtaking landscapes of the Sacred Valley and beyond.

Key Experiences: Ancient Inca Ruins and Sacred Valley Landscapes

As we began the early miles of the Classic Inca Trail, the landscape came alive with lush greenery, framed by the towering peaks of the Andes Mountains. The welcoming smiles of locals and the vibrant flora, including wild orchids and blooming cacti, made this a photographer’s paradise. Each scene was an invitation to capture the natural beauty of the region.

The 7-mile hike on Day 1 took us from an elevation of 8,244 feet to 9,350 feet. Despite some soreness from our previous hike to the Perolniyoc Waterfall, the thrill of being on the Classic Inca Trail and the opportunity to photograph such stunning landscapes lifted our spirits.

"Blooms Along the Classic Inca Trail"    Blooming cacti along the Classic Inca Trail offer stunning contrasts against the rugged landscape, making them perfect subjects for photography. Their vibrant flowers pop against the rocky terrain, creating striking compositions that capture the resilience of nature. These unexpected bursts of color along the ancient Inca paths showcase the beauty of the Andes Mountains and provide photographers with unique opportunities to frame the dramatic landscape.

Personal Reflections: A Journey of Rediscovery

This trek wasn’t just a physical challenge; it became a journey of personal reflection. As I walked the ancient trails, each photograph captured felt like a step toward rediscovering myself and reconnecting with the world around me. The grandeur of Peru’s Sacred Valley mirrored my inner journey, offering moments of beauty and renewal.

Photography Insights for Capturing the Classic Inca Trail

Equipped with our Canon gear, we frequently swapped lenses to capture the ever-changing scenery. The EF 16-35mm f/4 lens was ideal for expansive shots of the Sacred Valley and the Andes, while the EF 24-70mm f/2.8 lens was perfect for detailed close-ups of the flora and ancient stonework along the trail.

Here are some photography tips for capturing the beauty of the Inca Trail:

  • Use a wide-angle lens to frame both the foreground and background elements, creating a sense of depth and scale.

  • Adjust for the morning light by using a wider aperture to soften the glow and ensure the sharpness of distant peaks.

  • Don’t forget to capture the cultural elements along the trail, such as the traditional Andean villages and local people, to add storytelling to your images.

After a relaxing foot soak, we enjoyed a freshly prepared meal of river fish and reflected on the day’s adventure under the star-filled sky.
