Peru: Classic Inca Trail - Day 2 – Ascending to New Heights
Introduction
After an exciting first day on the Classic Inca Trail, filled with stunning views and personal reflections, Day 2 brought new physical challenges and opportunities for growth. Guided by our private guide, Nick, and supported by our dedicated team of porters, we left behind the lower valleys and picturesque pastures to face steeper climbs and the breathtaking beauty of the Andean highlands. Rising from 8,513 feet to 12,480 feet, the trail tested our endurance, but every step brought us closer to the cultural richness and natural wonders that make this trek so transformative.
With my daughter by my side, we continued our journey, each step deepening our connection to both the landscape and the legacy of the Inca civilization. The sense of adventure and anticipation grew stronger as we drew nearer to the ultimate destination: Machu Picchu.

Morning Ascent: From Farmlands to Ancient Ruins
We set off early, leaving the lower valley behind as our porters carried gear ahead. The cool morning air energized us as we trekked deeper into the Cusichaca Valley, where terraced farmlands and farmers with donkeys added a human touch to the wilderness.
Our guide led us to a grassy plain below the Llaqtapata ruins, giving us time to explore and capture the beauty around us. The morning light illuminated the peaks, revealing their rugged beauty. This tranquil moment allowed us to fully appreciate the stunning landscapes and connect with the local culture.
As photographers, my daughter and I captured the contrast between the vibrant highlands and the weathered ruins, making this stop a highlight of the day.
Cultural Immersion in Huayllabamba
As we continued our ascent through the Andean village of Huayllabamba, life unfolded at a peaceful pace. Children played in open fields while livestock roamed freely, showcasing the strong connection between the local people and the land in this remote area of the Sacred Valley.
Although there was a tempting WiFi stop, we chose to stay immersed in the natural beauty and rich culture of the region. This moment of cultural immersion provided a meaningful pause on our journey toward Machu Picchu, deepening our understanding of the Andean way of life.
The Steeper Ascent and a Lunch Break
As the trail steepened, we ascended higher into the Andes Mountains, with dramatic views unfolding at every turn. Before lunch, I used a wide-angle lens to capture the towering peaks and drifting clouds. The backdrop of Mount Huayanay made the landscape a photographer’s dream.
After our lunch break, I switched to a zoom lens to focus on the finer details of the rugged highlands. My daughter and I both found endless opportunities to photograph the untamed beauty of the Andes, reflecting on the journey so far and the stunning natural scenery that surrounded us.
The Final Climb to Llulluchapampa and The First Meeting of a Companion
Refreshed from lunch, we continued the climb toward the Llulluchapampa campsite, now at 12,467 feet. Each step revealed new perspectives on the rugged beauty of the Andes, though the ascent was challenging. As I walked, reflecting on the deeper meaning of the trek, I paused, feeling the weight of the moment.
Looking up, I noticed a friendly dog at the top of the trail, gazing at me with a knowing expression. It felt like we shared a silent understanding, his presence offering quiet encouragement to continue.
With renewed determination, I resumed the climb. The sun dipped behind the mountains, casting a golden hue over the valley, creating a serene close to the day. The companionship of the dog reminded me of the warmth and support that can appear, even in the most challenging moments, deepening my appreciation for the journey.
Evening at Llulluchapampa: A Night Under the Stars
We arrived at the Llulluchapampa campsite just before dusk, with the landscape bathed in soft, golden light. The Andean mountains loomed in the distance as the stars began to appear, offering a peaceful close to the day. Our new canine companion, the stray dog, laid down beside our tent after we gave him some water, but we refrained from feeding him, hoping he would find his way home.
As the sunset faded and the crisp night air set in, my daughter and I reflected on the day’s journey under the star-filled Andean sky. Laying in the quiet camp, we felt a deep connection to the land and the journey from bustling village life to the serene mountains—a perfect end to a day filled with challenges, beauty, and quiet reflection.
