Peru: Classic Inca Trail Day 3 – Conquering the Heights

On the third day of the Classic Inca Trail, adventurers tackle the most physically demanding leg of the journey, an 8.7-mile trek that leads to the highest point on the trail, Dead Woman’s Pass, at 13,828 ft (4,215 m). This day is not just about the altitude; it’s a rich tapestry of breathtaking landscapes, the companionship of a stray dog named Chico, and the camaraderie forged amidst challenging weather conditions.

Starting with a steady ascent to the pass, we were rewarded with sweeping views of the valleys below, followed by a steep descent toward the Pacaymayo River. Along the way, the ruins of Runkuraqay offered a glimpse into the Incan legacy, while the mystical cloud forests created an almost magical atmosphere. However, as the day wore on, a rainstorm transformed the trail into a slippery challenge, testing our resolve.

Arriving at Phuyupatamarca, aptly named the "place of the clouds," we found solace in our rain-soaked tents, reflecting on the day's trials and triumphs. As we settled in for a stormy night, gratitude washed over us for the beauty and bonds formed along this rugged journey.

Join us as we explore the unforgettable moments of Day 3 on the Classic Inca Trail, where nature’s challenges lead to profound connections and lasting memories.
